Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition Announces 2010 Finalists
Five finalists out of a field of 73 chamber music ensembles have been selected to compete for more than $15,000 in prizes at Easton's Avalon Theatre on March 27, capping the fourth biennial Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition. The announcement of finalists came from the Competition Committee's co-chairs, Anna Larkin and Arnie Lerman, following an intensive anonymous review of entrant CDs by several panels of preliminary judges, representing a broad cross-section accomplished chamber musicians from around the country.
The 73 entrants this year represent a 30% increase over the largest field of applicants from past competitions, placing the Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition among the leading competitions of its type in the world. This year's competitors were from 5 countries and 17 states and represent some of the world's finest young chamber musicians. Marcy Rosen, CCM Artistic Co-director and coordinator of preliminary judges, commented "We had a remarkable group of entrants; the finalists are an extremely talented group of chamber musicians."
The finalists are: The Harlem Quartet, New York; The Jasper Quartet, New Haven, CT; The Klimt Trio, Boston; The Red Line Sax Quartet, Rochester, NY; and Trio Sima, New York. Members of the five ensembles have studied at some of the world's finest conservatories. The finalists are multiple prize-winners in their own right, and all have received substantial recognition for the quality of their performances, both in the U.S. and internationally.
The finalists will perform on March 27 before a panel of three internationally acclaimed judges: Pamela Frank, world renowned violin soloist, Lambert Orkis, keyboard at the National Symphony Orchestra and J. Lawrie Bloom, clarinet with the Chicago Symphony. Performances will run throughout the afternoon, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., and continue in the evening from 6:45 p.m. until about 9:00 p.m. The announcement of the first and second prize winners, as well as the winner of the audience choice award, will take place during a reception at the end of the performances.
The Competition performances are open to the general public. Tickets are $10 per person for the entire day, and allow audience members to leave and reenter between individual performances. Through an arrangement between Chesapeake Chamber Music and the Talbot County Tourism Office, anyone attending the Competition can be entered into a drawing for free tickets to CCM's Festival 25 in June just by dining at one of the restaurants participating in Talbot Restaurant Week on March 27. A coupon to enter the drawing will be given to each person purchasing a ticket.
